Planning your days around Régua
The places listed above fall naturally into a few easy outings, and grouping them saves time on the Douro's winding roads. Peso da Régua sits on the north bank of the river, so the museum, the riverside pier and the railway station are all within walking distance of the town centre. A gentle first day might start at the Museu do Douro, which gives useful background on the demarcated wine region, the terraced vineyards and the old rabelo boats that once carried port downriver. Afterwards, a stroll along the waterfront brings you to the cruise pier, where many boat trips on the river begin and end.
The wine estates make a good second day. Quinta do Vallado lies just outside town on the north side of the river, while Quinta da Pacheca is across the bridge towards Lamego. Both are working estates that welcome visitors, but tastings and tours are usually arranged in advance, especially at weekends and during the harvest in late summer and early autumn. Check each estate's official website for current visiting arrangements, and plan a driver or a guided tour if you intend to taste. Our Douro Valley tours page has more ideas for organised trips.
For the views, head up into the hills. São Leonardo de Galafura is one of the best-known viewpoints over the valley, and the roads up are narrow and steep, so allow extra time and go in daylight. Late afternoon light tends to be especially beautiful over the terraces.
Casa de Mateus, near Vila Real, is a longer excursion and pairs well with a half day exploring that town. If you prefer not to drive, the Douro railway line from Régua follows the river upstream and is a scenic outing in its own right; timetables change, so confirm departures with the rail operator before you set off.
